Heroes

Abstract

Three junior English classes at Perry High School worked with first and second grade classes at Knapp Elementary in a year long project. During the previous two years students in these teachers' classrooms communicated as penpals through journals and collaborated on storybooks as an end project. This year, the project was extended to include the use of technology and further collaboration with Edison Junior High School students. The topic of Heroes was carried through three major units:

1. Penpal Journaling
2. Recognizing Local Heroes
3. Creating Fictional Hero Storybooks

• What are the characteristics of a hero?
• What kinds of contributions do heroes make in society?
• Who are some historical heroes?
• Who are some heroes today?
• How can you be a hero?
